Misericordia University graduate nursing students recently presented their evidence-based practice projects at the Graduate Nursing Scholarly Synthesis Poster Day in John J. Passan Hall's College of Health Sciences.

The graduate synthesis capstone course represents the culmination of graduate nursing students' skills and knowledge. Students demonstrate their ability to integrate theory, research, and clinical or functional practice in a seminar format. The final capstone scholarly project provides evidence of students' synthesis of knowledge through written, oral and critical thinking skills.

"It is in the synthesis of our knowledge that we celebrate what is uniquely nursing, which we use to improve the care of individuals, families and our communities,'' said Cynthia Mailloux, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.E., professor and chair of the Department of Nursing at Misericordia University. "As our graduating students demonstrate their ability to integrate theory, research and practice, we hope to stimulate interest and concern about the present and future of nursing as a learned profession.''

The following Master of Science in Nursing degree students presented their research: Lauren Adamchak, M.S.N., R.N., "Say Yes to the Statin: Hyperlipidemia Prevention"; Rebecca Cavill, M.S.N., R.N., "Let's Dia-Beat This"; Kimberly A. Fuss, M.S.N., R.N., "Cranberry and Urinary Tract Infection Prevention"; Elsa Gates, M.S.N., R.N., "Preventing Diabetes with Lifestyle Modification"; Kelly Gensel, M.S.N., R.N., "Intranasal Corticosteroids Treatment for Allergic Rhinitis in Asthma Patients"; Pamela Giannetti, M.S.N., R.N., Probiotics for Prevention"; Kelly Hahn, "Varenicline and Mild to Moderate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Smoking Cessation"; Lauren Lomando, M.S.N., R.N., "Feel Relief without the Grief"; Lisa Miller, "Some Like it Hot"; Amanda Moran, M.S.N., R.N., "Waiting or Whining: Watchful Waiting for Acute Otitis Media"; Rachel Rolison, M.S.N., R.N., "How Low Can you Go? Tucker, M.S.N., R.N., "Gut Feeling: Probiotics to Prevent Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea," and Maggie Schlude, M.S.N., R.N., "Soothing a Sore Throat: Steroids and Acute Pharyngitis";

Graduate faculty members Dr. Mailloux, Annette Weiss, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.E., assistant professor and director of the Expressway RN program; Darlene Kuchinski-Donnelly, M.S.N., C.R.N.P., R.N.C., assistant professor, and Kathleen Sheikh, Ph.D., F.N.P.-B.C., C.N.E., assistant professor, served as course faculty mentors for the capstone projects.
