Misericordia University recently hosted the service-learning workshop, "ENGAGE! Out of the Classroom and into the Community," that featured 18 guest speakers and a panel discussion with five presidents from regional colleges and universities.

Co-sponsored by the Service-Learning Intercollegiate Consortium of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Campus Compact, the conference addressed community-based learning in the 21st century; pairing students and service-learning opportunities; meeting community needs by harnessing students' technical abilities; service-learning in international settings, and touching underserved populations through service learning.

The consortium was established in 2007 with the assistance of grant from Learn and Service America to expand efforts to promote community service as a part of classroom instruction. Members of the collaboration consortium include Keystone College, King's College, Lackawanna College, Marywood University, Misericordia University, University of Scranton, and Wilkes University.

Workshops, like the one held at Misericordia University in April, are held to expand the expertise of service-learning professionals at the institutions of higher education and to strengthen the local service-learning network.

Guest speakers included Cindy Rickards, Ed.D., Drexel University; Lynn Hartle, Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University, Brandywine; Donna Chambers, Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University, Berks; Dan Kimbrough, M.A., Misericordia University; Joseph J. Galante, J.D., M.B.A., M.A., P.M.C., B.B.A., C.F.E., Millersville University of Pennsylvania; Marc Marchese, Ph.D., King's College; Joan M. Blewitt, Ph.D., King's College; Andrew P. Miller, Ph.D., Wilkes University; Janice Thompson, Ph.D., King's College; William Bolan, Ph.D., King's College; Sra.
