A stunning exhibition of photography by legendary photographer Ansel Adams will be presented by the Pauly Friedman and Marquis George MacDonald Art Galleries at Misericordia University from May 15 through Sept. 30. The exhibition, funded in part by The Sandra Dyczewski Maffei Endowment, features a collection of 47 works by Adams, about two-thirds of a selection he compiled late in his career to serve as a succinct representation of his life's work.

The exhibition at Misericordia University opens Sunday, May 15 from 1-5 p.m. The exhibit is open, free to the public.

On Sept. 19, Brian F. Carso, Jr., J.D., Ph.D., associate professor of history and government at Misericordia University, will present two lectures entitled, "The Clearest Way into the Universe: Nature's Meaning in the Photographs of Ansel Adams,'' from 2-3 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall.

Called "The Museum Set," these works reveal the importance Adams placed on the drama and splendor of natural environments that might not, to the ordinary passing hiker, have revealed their secrets. Included are many of Adams' most famous and best-loved photographs, which encompass the full scope of his work: elegant details of nature, architectural studies, portraits, and the breathtaking landscapes for which he is revered. The exhibition also includes a photo portrait of Ansel Adams by James Alinder.

In a career that spanned more than five decades, Adams became one of America's most beloved landscape photographers and one of its more respected environmentalists. Adams profoundly influenced the course of 20th century photography not only through the example of his sumptuous and technically precise images, but also by means of his personal energy and devotion to advancing the cause of photography as an art form. As an artist, educator, innovator, and writer, he helped establish many of the institutions that have come to represent the highest aspirations of the medium of photography.

The collection was donated to Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding, California, by Dr. Fidel Realyvasquez in 2002. Turtle Bay Exploration Park is a 300-acre cultural complex located in Northern California on the Sacramento River. Its facilities include a museum with permanent, interactive exhibits and two large special exhibition galleries, the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, and the world famous Sundial Bridge by world-renowned Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. Turtle Bay Exploration Park educates visitors of all ages with entertaining and stimulating exhibitions and programs that interpret the complex relationships between people and their environments.

The traveling exhibition is organized by Turtle Bay Exploration Park in association with Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California. Since 1967, Landau Traveling Exhibitions has presented more than 700 fine art and architecture exhibitions at museums and university galleries throughout the United States and world.

The gallery is closed on Mondays and for all university holidays and snow days. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, log on to www.misericordia.edu/art or contact Dona Posatko, gallery director, at (570) 674-6250.
