The Celtic Tenors – three virtuoso tenors – blend their Irish roots with classical training, operatic expertise, and a polished, harmonious sound to present an exciting concert experience that blends together classical, opera, folk, Celtic and pop music. The Decca Records Australia-recording artists have sold more than 1 million records worldwide, reaching No. 1 on the charts in Ireland and Germany, and No. 2 in England. They also have recorded three platinum albums, reached the Top 10 Billboard charts in the U.S. and Canada, and appeared on television across the U.S., Canada and Europe.
Comfortable in all genres, they take the audience on a musical voyage during their concerts by stepping away from their classical roots and adding a more contemporary sound. With this approach, they have created a much larger fan base which has earned them critical acclaim around the world from music critics and fans alike.
The group has a truly global reach, as the trio has performed in cathedrals and major concert halls and other venues in international cities like New York, Amsterdam and Shanghai. Concert reviewers have praised their performances as being "world class," "exhilarating" and "thoughtful."
"This ensemble is world-class,'' a reviewer for De Gelderlander newspaper in the Netherlands wrote. The capital Times in Wisconsin published, "The Celtic Tenors sing with the practiced ease of singers who know each other's voices like a comfortable pillow.'' Phil Coulter, the composer of "Remember Me,'' added: "They have reinvented the whole tenor idiom.''
Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson have performed together as the Celtic Tenors for more than 15 years. Gilsenan was born in North Meath. At the age of 10, his classical training began in the Sisters of Mercy convent in Kells, County Meath, and he progressed to some of the great Irish and Scottish teachers. A Sligo native, Nelson holds a Bachelor of Music degree from University College Dublin. A student of vocal coaches David Harper, Britta Sundberg, and Edith Forrest and Dr. Veronica Dunne, Nelson has had more than 50 roles in operas and operettas. Simpson, a native of Omagh, studied at Queen's University, Royal Irish Academy of Music, and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He also has performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and the Zurich Kammer Orchestra.
